Are you like me? Did you spend years ignoring the advice of dermatologists, your mom, and every beauty blogger out there about the importance of wearing sunscreen every day? Well, if so, let me tell you, it’s time to pay the piper.
I spent years scoffing at SPF, thinking that because I didn’t burn easily and didn’t spend a lot of time in direct sunlight, I didn’t need it. I mean, who wants to deal with the greasy feeling and the white cast that most sunscreens leave behind, right? But let me tell you, I’m paying for it now.
I have developed persistent pigment that is frustratingly resistant to treatment. It’s like a constant reminder of my foolishness. And the worst part? It could have been easily avoided if I had just listened and used sunscreen every day.
So, don’t be like me. Be smarter. Be a daily SPF-er. And don’t skimp on the sunscreen either. Make sure that the product you choose has coverage for both UVA and UVB rays. This means that it should be a combination of a chemical and physical sunscreen, like one that contains zinc or titanium oxide.
These ingredients work together to convert harmful UV rays at a molecular level, making them more benign, while also forming an impenetrable barrier on the skin that prevents the remaining UV rays from entering the skin where they can damage DNA. So, not only will you be protecting your skin from sun damage, but you’ll also be helping to prevent premature aging and even skin cancer.
So, the lesson here is clear. Don’t be stingy with your sunscreen. Don’t skimp on it. Use it every day, rain or shine, and make sure it provides both UVA and UVB protection. Trust me, your future self will thank you.
