Wrinkle treatments act at the point where nerve tissue inserts into muscular tissue. By blocking action at this junction, carefully delivered treatment may temporarily reduce muscular activity. The same products may also be used for down-regulating sebum and sweat production, for muscle hyperactivity (e.g. spasticity, migraine, bowel motility), reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles and muscle bulk; and to modify facial expression.
Most commonly we use these treatments to address wrinkles and lines.

+ What are the risks and expected side effects?
- Bleeding, bruising, swelling and redness is common, with bruising and swelling potentially lasting upto 14 days. In most cases bruising can be well disguised with cosmetic products. Alternatively we are able to offer interventions to assist with the resolution of bruising + swelling
- Skin and tissue at the treatment site(s) may be slightly tender
Although uncommon, the potential risks of treatment include:
- Ptosis/asymmetry/heaviness/dissatisfaction with results - at Aescend we aim to review all patients at 2 weeks post treatment to assess results and effectiveness of treatment. At this time we can address any outstanding concerns, however correction is not recommended prior to 2 weeks as during this time, the product is still taking effect. Perceived asymmetries, retained movement and/or heaviness will in many cases resolve without additional intervention if the 2 week post-treatment period is observed
- Infection - all measures are taken to ensure that no microbes are introduced with treatment. Patients should adhere to after care information to ensure no subsequent contamination of sites
- Sensitivity/allergy, anaphylaxis - pre treatment screening is attended to reduce risk of inadvertent reaction. In the case of a reaction, emergency equipment is located on-site to appropriately manage such incidences
- Muscle weakness
- Headache - uncommonly occurs after the first few treatments and with regular maintenance. If you do experience headaches after treatment we recommend taking paracetamol. For headaches that persist or are severe please seek medical guidance
- Non-inflammatory periorbital oedema (swelling of the eye area in the absence of inflammation) - is a rare side effect that can occur with treatment of the upper face and eye area and is usually more likely in patients with preexisting eye puffiness and/or dry eye. It results from weakening of the muscles that stimulate lymphatic drainage of the eye and should only persist for 1-2 weeks. It is generally found that the effect is likely to improve with subsequent treatment.
If you experience signs of infection (including heat, pain, redness, discharge, fever) or signs or allergic reaction (skin rash, swollen lips, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, wheezing, racing heart, dizziness, nausea) please seek immediate medical help.

+ How many treatments will I need?
Following treatment, results will not appear for 3-5 days. Often during this time asymmetry or incomplete loss of movement may be noted, however this can be due to incomplete action and is likely to improve within 2 weeks. At 2 weeks we will review your results and at this time we can re-treat as required.
As results are only temporary, re-treatment is frequently required. Depending on individual characteristics and dosing, re-treatment may be required every 2-6 months.
+ What should I do prior to treatment?
- Consider rescheduling vaccinations to more than two weeks either side of treatment
- DO NOT WEAR MAKEUP TO YOUR APPOINTMENT
- Avoid exposing the area to the sun in the two weeks prior. Reschedule if you develop any active skin conditions/infections/inflammation at the site of treatment
- Consider paracetamol 30 minutes prior if your doctor has not advised otherwise
- Consider commencing on arnica and/or bromelain to assist with reducing swelling and bruising following treatment
- Avoid alcohol consumption 48 hours either side of treatment
- Consider cessation of smoking
- Cease any blood-thinning medication including fish oil and anti-inflammatories (in consultation with your doctor) at least 2 weeks prior to treatment
- If you have a history of cold sores, prevenative medication is often recommended and is essential in cases of frequent or severe outbreaks
- Avoid strenuous activities (exercise) and exposure to heat in the 2-4 hours prior to treatment as this increases blood flow to tissue and may effect outcome
+ What happens during treatment?
During treatment you will discuss the risks and potential side effects of treatment with your artisan; prior to being provided the opportunity to ask questions and sign a consent form. Photos will be attended, and the treatment area(s) identified.
This area will be prepared for treatment and measures may be provided for additional comfort. Please note that numbing cream is not normally required, nor recommended. We do not routinely have this available during appointments for wrinkle treatment.
Treatment will proceed by introducing small amounts of product into the area. Throughout the procedure your artisan will continue to enquire as to your comfort.
Following treatment the site will be re-cleansed.
+ Is it painful?
Treatment for wrinkles is only mildly uncomfortable, with pain rapidly dissipating post treatment. Ice may be used 2 hours after treatment though is not recommended at the time of intervention.
Paracetamol may be also be taken within 30 minutes of treatment if you have not been previously advised to avoid this medication. We do not however recommend aspirin, diclofenac (voltaren), meloxicam, ibuprofen (neurofen) or any other anti-inflammatory prior to treatment as it is likely to excerbate swelling and bruising.
+ Aftercare
- Avoid intense exercise, swimming, spas, or any activity that increases blood pressure and/or body temperature so as to avoid exacerbation of swelling and/or bruising, reduce risk of infection, and improve efficacy of treatment
- Avoid touching the treatment sites and/or applying any makeup to the skin for 12 hours
- Ice may be used for discomfort and swelling after 2 hours though is generally not required
- Do not rub, massage or apply hard pressure to the treated area (including facials) for at least 48 hours. In this time also try to avoid sleeping on your face and/or utilising powerful facial expressions
- Sleep with head elevated, on your back until resolution of swelling
- Avoid direct sun exposure and wear spf 30+ daily
- Avoid use of physical exfoliants or active skin care at the area for at least 72 hours
- Avoid chemical peels, microdermabraision, IPL/laser, or intense skin treatments/cosmetic intervention for at least 2 weeks
- Hirudoid cream, arnica (topical or oral) and bromelain may be used post treatment to expedite recovery
lip treatment | facial volumisation
One of the main methods of volumisation is introduction of a sugar-based molecule that occurs naturally in the skin. This molecule sequesters water from surrounding tissue, allowing it to expand. Placed into various layers of the tissue, volumising treatments may assist with smoothing/filling lines and wrinkles, improving the appearance of deep tissue folds, and camouflaging some forms of scarring. Treatment may also be used to provide volume, shape and form to areas of the face, including the cheeks, lips, chin, jaw, temples and hollows under the eyes.

Although uncommon, the potential risks of treatment include:
- Assymmetry/dissatisfaction with results - at Aescend we aim to review all patients at 2 weeks post treatment to assess results following resolution of swelling. At this time we can address any of your concerns, however prior to this time intervention for asymmetry may lead to overcorrection
- Granuloma - more common with older products and often associated with technique, granulomas are fibrous nodules that form as a result of product in tissue. Spontaneous resolution is possible, however often additional intervention upto and including surgery is required.
- Tindall effect - this is radiance/discolouration of the skin under angles of light due to superficial placement or product and/or thin overlying tissue and more commonly occurs with treatment of the undereye area. Often dissolution of product is required
- Infection - all measures are taken to ensure that no microbes are introduced with treatment. Patients should adhere to after care information to ensure no subsequent contamination of sites
- Sensitivity/allergy, anaphylaxis - pre treatment screening is attended to reduce risk of inadvertent reaction. In the case of a reaction, emergency equipment is located on site to appropriately manage such incidences
- Vascular occlusion - a rare but serious complication in which product may occlude a blood vessel, effecting subsequent blood supply to tissue. May be experienced as intense pain, bruising at the site with adjacent blanching of tissue and/or presence of mottling. In few cases worldwide this has been associated with denaturation of tissue, and in the most serious of cases blindness.
If you experience skin discolouration (paleness, greyness, mottling), signs of infection (including heat, pain, redness, discharge, fever), signs or allergic reaction (skin rash, swollen lips, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, wheezing, racing heart, dizziness, nausea) please seek immediate medical help.

+ How many treatments will I need?
The results of treatment are immediate and often only one session is required, with the opportunity for refinement at two weeks post-treatment. Where larger amounts are required, multiple sessions may be recommended to ensure the most optimal results.
Depending on individual characteristics and the product used, results can be expected to last for 9-24 months.

This area will be prepared for treatment and in some cases topical numbing agent may be applied.
Treatment will proceed by introducing small amounts of product via various techniques into the area, sometimes under ultrasound assistance. In many instances a long, blunt device called a 'cannula' will be utilised to improve safety and optimal placement of product. Throughout the procedure your artisan will continue to enquire as to your comfort. Generally pain decreases with treatment as the products themselves contain lignocaine which concurrently anaesthetises tissue.
Following treatment the site will be re-cleansed. You will be offered ice for comfort if required and antiseptic cream will be applied. For treatments likely to cause bruising or more obvious swelling, free LED may be offered.
+ Is it painful?

At Aescend we love lips. But what's more? We love lips that are subtle, natural, harmonious and complementary. Whether you are looking for a different shape, correction of asymmetry, increased size or volume; definition, or a bit more hydration we take the time to hear your concerns, assess your features and plan your treatment.
Although we are trained in all techniques of lip treatment - 'tenting', 'fencing', 'nonsurgical lip lift', 'russian doll lips', cannula, each treatment we perform is bespoke, utilising a variety of methods to deliver a result that is customised and designed for you.
During your lip treatment appointment your lips will be anaesthetised with a concentrated, compounded topical anaesthetic (dental blocks are available on request). As your lips are numbing you enjoy some time out with a warm blanket and a cooling crystal face mask.
When it comes time to treat your lips we adopt every means possible to increase safety and avoid the potential for migration. Although the industry at large is still determining the cause of migration, factors such as overfilling, depth of placement, product selection, penetration of the lip border and aftercare are all possible sources that we try to control. If we suspect your lips have already migrated, we discuss options with you for ongoing treatment, though will rarely offer additional volumisation.
Once your lip injections are complete, you will be taken to our LED recovery room, or placed under our portable LED light. This helps to reduce swelling and bruising and minimise recovery. Prior to leaving, your lips will be treated with an antiseptic balm and you will be offered a complementary ice pack for ongoing use. Your aftercare will be discussed, and you will be given the option to purchase one of our 'recovery kits'.
Often the final result of your lips can be distorted by swelling and bruising which can persist for a couple of weeks. If you feel like your lips are not perfect upon leaving, we offer a 2 week follow-up appointment during which additional treatment may be performed to improve symmetry.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP)
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) refers to a concentrated solution of platelets and blood constituents autologously derived from your own product. A sample of your blood is taken in-clinic, and processed on-site via centrifuge, during which blood cells are separated from the plasma component of blood. Within the solution that is harvested, is a host of growth factors and naturally derived molecules that normally promote wound healing and inflammation. The potential benefit of such, is cell differentiation, tissue vascularisation, revitalisation of tissue and lay down of collagen. Traditionally used in sports medicine to treat avascular injuries of soft tissue, PRP may provide benefit for tissue health and repair.
Cosmetically it may help with skin rejuvenation (fine lines, wrinkles, crepeing, volume loss, dark eye circles), hair growth, and conditions of sexual dysfunction.
OVERVIEW -
PLATELET RICH FIBRIN (PRF)
Like PRP, Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) refers to an autologously derived blood product during which a sample of your blood taken in-clinic is processed via centrifuge. During the preparation of PRF, a concentrated solution of fibrin, stem cells and platelets is produced.
Like PRP, these factors may have the benefit of inducing cell differentiation, tissue vascularisation, revitalisation of tissue and lay down of collagen. However, because of processing differences, the concentration of PRF is greater that of PRP; and the creation of a fibrin mesh during the process may change the rate of release and efficacy of growth factors within the resulting solution. Cosmetically, PRF has similar applications to PRP, with results reportedly greater for some indications. That said, PRF stays stable for a much shorter period than PRP and so is less suited to time sensitive treatments (e.g. for hair loss).

- Redness, warmth, tingling and some treatment site pain in the treatment area is common. This will resolve over the next 24-48 hours
- Minor swelling (particularly under the eyes) is likely to occur following treatment and may take more than 72 hours to resolve
- Bruising is extremely common and can take more than a week to heal. Arnica ointment may be applied +/- LED treatment after 3 days
- Infection is unlikely, though a potential side effect of treatment

+ How many treatments will I need?
Generally a minimum of 3 treatments at 4-6 week intervals (depending on the therapy) are recommended in order to see visbile effects. As treatment aims to reinvigorate tissue, generally effects become noticeable with tissue regeneration or new hair growth at approximately 2-3 months post your final treatment. However anecdotally, patients often report effect prior to this time.
+ What should I do prior to treatment?
- DO NOT WEAR MAKEUP TO YOUR APPOINTMENT
- Ideally avoid use of anti-inflammatories, steroid and blood-thinnig medication (in accordance with medical advice) for 2 weeks prior to treatment
- Cease use of vitamin A/retinol based skin care in the area at least 2 weeks prior
- Avoid alcohol consumption and/or recreational drug use at least 48 hours prior to treatment
- Consider cessation of smoking
- On the morning of treatment, ensure you are well hydrated and have had something to eat
+ What happens during treatment?
During treatment you will discuss the risks and side effects of treatment with your artisan; prior to being provided the opportunity to ask questions and sign a consent form. Photos will be attended, and the treatment area(s) identified.
This area will be prepared for treatment and anaesthetised as appropriate.
Your artisan will then take 1-3 vials of blood from your arm (depending on your treatment) and place this in the centrifuge. Once separated, the plasma will be further prepared for introduction. + Is it painful?
PRP/PRF is a mildly uncomfortable procedure which is often able to be somewhat alleviated with anaesthetic. The product itself initiates inflammation immediately upon placement and can be accompanied by a hot, burning, prickly sensation which is mildly unpleasant. This sensation is short lived, often resolving within 5 minutes of treatment.
- Avoid washing the site for 4 hours as this allows excess PRP/PRF to activate on the skin and assists in blood clotting
- Hair may be washed that evening with non-medicated preparations
- Use of cosmetics and alcohol should be avoided for at least 24 hours
- Swimming, saunas, submersion, excessively hot showers, perspiration, and intense exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours
- Abstinence should be observed for at least 48 hours following sexual rejuvenation treatments, and hygiene practices strictly adhered to
- For at least 72 hours, ice should be avoided, as well anti-inflammatory medication, anti-histamines and steroid medication
- Sleep with head elevated until resolution of swelling
- Avoid direct sun exposure and wear spf 30+ daily
- Avoid use of physical exfoliants or active skin care at the area for at least 72 hours
cosmetic dissolution
One of the best (and worst) things about cosmetic treatments is that they are temporary. This is because within the tissue, naturally occurring enzymes called hyalauronidases work to break down artificially placed volume. These enzymes are utilised during reversal of some cosmetic treatments which may be necessary in rare circumstances such as:

+ What are the risks and expected side effects?
- Bleeding, bruising, swelling and redness is common, with bruising and swelling potentially lasting upto 14 days. In most cases it can be covered with cosmetic products. Alternatively we are able to offer interventions to assist with the resolution of bruising + swelling
- Skin and tissue at the treatment site(s) may be slightly tender
- Lumps of old product may be palpable - these are largely expected to resolve within a few days and can be gently massaged under the instruction of your artisan
Although uncommon, the potential risks of treatment with cosmetic dissolution include:
- Assymmetry/dissatisfaction with results - at Aescend we aim to review all patients at 2 weeks post treatment to assess results following resolution of swelling. At this time we can address any of your concerns, however prior to this time intervention for asymmetry may lead to overcorrection
- Requirement for re-treatment - although we endeavour to treat with maximal therapeutic effect, the response of the patient and implanted product to treatment is highly variable and results cannot be guaranteed with one treatment. At Aescend we are aiming to bring Ultrasound into practice to aid with specificity of dissolving treatments and placement of product
- Infection - all measures are taken to ensure that no microbes are introduced with treatment. Patients should adhere to after care information to ensure no subsequent contamination of sites
- Sensitivity/allergy, anaphylaxis - pre treatment screening is attended to reduce risk of inadvertent reaction. In the case of a reaction, emergency equipment is located on site to appropriately manage such incidences
- Lumps and nodules - It is likely that in the period following treatment lumps of undissolved product may still be palpable. The extent of this will be reviewed at your follow up appointment, however often lumpiness will significantly improve within the first week post treatment.
- Local anaesthetic toxicity - Is a very rare side effect of local anaesthetic administration and is unlikely at the doses used during treatment. Manifestations are usually within 1-5 mins after treatment with onset between 30 s - 60 mins. Symptoms may include metallic taste, light headedness, dizziness, visual/auditory disturbance, tinnitus, disorientation, drowsiness, chest pain, difficulty breathing, profuse sweating, palpitations and shortness of breath. For symptoms that persist please notify your Aescend artisan and/or attend your local hospital for any emergencies.
If you experience skin discolouration (paleness, greyness, mottling), signs of infection (including heat, pain, redness, discharge, fever), signs or allergic reaction (skin rash, swollen lips, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, wheezing, racing heart, dizziness, nausea) please seek immediate medical help.

+ How many treatments will I need?
The results of dissolving are often seen within 72 hours post treatment and often only one session is required. In saying that, complete resolution/correction is never guaranteed, and often with harder, deeply placed, encapsulated or extensive amounts of product, more than one session will likely be required. At two weeks we aim to follow up patients following dissolution, at which point a greater idea about treatment course will become clear.
Results of dissolution are permanent, however previous dissolution by no means guarantees that future treatment will not also eventually require dissolution.

- Consider rescheduling vaccinations to more than two weeks either side of treatment

+ What happens during treatment?

A patch test will be conducted by superficially placing a small aliquot of product into the fat tissue of the forearm. This will be observed for 30 minutes to ensure no reactivity prior to proceeding with dissolution.
The area to be dissolved will be prepared for treatment and in most cases local anaesthetic used to providing local numbing of tissue.

+ Is it painful?
Dissolving is a somewhat uncomfortable procedure, often likened to being stung by a bee. Topical or local anaesthetic is frequently used to reduce discomfort, however this generally does not cause complete anaesthetic effect and is often associated with sharp, stingy pain on placement. Ice is available during and following treatment to assist with pain and swelling.
Paracetamol may be also be taken within 30 minutes of treatment if you are not on medical advice to avoid this medication. We do not however routinely recommend aspirin, diclofenac (voltaren), meloxicam, ibuprofen (neurofen) or any other anti-inflammatory prior to treatment as it is likely to exacerbate swelling and bruising.
You are likely to experience some discomfort during treatment, however please advise your artisan of any intense pain.
+ Aftercare
- Avoid intense exercise, swimming, spas, or any activity that increases blood pressure and/or body temperature so as to avoid exacerbation of swelling and/or bruising, and reduce risk of infection

- Under some circumstances, massage may be encouraged, this should proceed only when advised by your Aescend artisan

- Avoid chemical peels, microdermabraision, IPL/laser, or intense skin treatments/cosmetic intervention for at least 2 weeks
- Hiruoid cream, arnica (topical or oral) and bromelain may be used post treatment to expedite recovery
- Dissolving can result in severe allergic reaction, a life threatening state which requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms can include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, difficulty swallowing, swelling of the tongue, eyelids, lips, hoarseness of the voice, stomach pain, nausea or diarrhoea. - Swelling, bruising, redness, pain, itching, discolouration and tenderness at the treatment site(s) are possible and commonly expected reactions in the first 1-14 days post treatment and will typically resolve spontanenously
- Most people find that they can return to work and resume normal activities immediately after treatment.
- PLLA is delivered in an aqueous base and so therefore is associated with significant swelling which will resolve in hours-days. At this point the treatment will look no different to when you first presented. CMC and PLC on the other hand is delivered in a gel carrier and will provide immediate soft tissue augmentation while may continue to swell over the subsequent days after placement.
- Some warmth and heat is expected with treatment as this is part of the inflammatory response biostimulants encourage to generate collagen. However, excessive warmth, redness, pain and pus should be escalated to an artisan as they may indicate signs of infection

- Skin necrosis/vascular occlusion - a rare but serious complication in which product may occlude a blood vessel, effecting subsequent blood supply to tissue. May be experienced as intense pain, bruising at the site with adjacent blanching of tissue and/or presence of mottling. In few cases worldwide this has been associated with denaturation of tissue, and in the most serious of cases blindness.
- Scarring - may occur as a side effect of tissue injury, infection, reaction, granuloma and/or necrosis (vascular occlusion)
- Nodules and granulomas - nodules are a type of foreign body reaction where microspheres will become inflamed. Granulomas are fibrous nodules that form as a chronic response to a foreign body in tissue. - FOR SCULPTRA (PLLA) ONLY: Integration and success of the treatment is encouraged through ongoing massage. The general rule is 5-5-5 – 5 minutes of massage, 5 times a day for 5 days. Ellanse (CMC/PLC) does not routinely require massage and this should be avoided unless discussed with your artisan.

MICROINFUSION, MESOTHERAPY

Microinfusion and mesotherapy are methods of superficially infusing the skin with active products that aim to hydrate skin, reduce sweating, contract pore size and improve overall skin health. Whereas microinfusion tends to involve repetitively stamping the skin with a specialised device to deliver ingredients; mesotherapy utilises a series of simultaneous injections (either manually or with an automated device) for a deeper, more targeted treatment.
Skin boosters tend to form the basis of both therapies when utilised for skin rejuvenation. These products have high hydration potential, and aim to temporarily plump and hydrate the skin, smooth lines and wrinkles, and add lustre. Skin boosters can also be used to treat deeper superficial lines (including vertical lines) resulting from loss of elasticity, dehydration and/or scarring, with an effect that lasts approximately 3 months.

Both methods of product delivery are suitable pre-event, with microinfusion offering almost immediate return to activities (though generally less duration of effect). After consultation with your Aescend artisan, you will be crafted a bespoke elixir for microinfusion or mesotherapy.
